Distressed by opinion editors’ omission | Letter

In Nancy Lessard’s June 26 letter, “Susan Collins correctly prioritizes veterans,” the writer waxes poetic about how Sen. Collins loves veterans. Lessard noted in the letter that she and her sister have donated about 300 homemade afghans to veterans since visiting Normandy, France. I thought this was great; I also make quilts and blankets.

So, I did an online search on Nancy Lessard. I used the search engine Duck Duck Go and my search criteria was _“_Nancy Lessard Maine.” Image my surprise when I learned that Nancy Lessard was listed as a town chair of Collins’ reelection campaign.

This information was on the first page of results. I had a visceral reaction to this discovery. Not toward Lessard, who is free to be passionate about any issue she wants. My issue is with the editors. You withheld information from your readers. That information is actually pertinent. You could have added Lessard’s title within the Susan Collins reelection organization after her name and town name. You do that kind of thing all the time.

If you didn’t know, you are not doing your due diligence. If you did know, you actively made the decision to exclude the information. This seems like a lie to me. You told your readers a lie by omission. Trust is really hard to regain.
