Dem Pappas Warns GOP Could Flip N.H. Senate Seat
Maine Rep. Chris Pappas Urges National Democrats to Prioritize New Hampshire Senate Race
Portland, ME – U.S. Representative Chris Pappas, a Democrat from Maine, has warned that the party could lose a key New Hampshire Senate seat to Republican contender John E. Sununu if national Democrats do not treat the race as a serious battleground. Pappas made the remarks during a town‑hall event in Portland, emphasizing the importance of strategic support and resource allocation for the upcoming election.
Pappas, who has represented Maine’s 2nd congressional district since 2017, highlighted New Hampshire’s role as a swing state with significant electoral influence. “We can’t afford to let New Hampshire slip away,” he said. “The national party needs to step up and invest in a race that could shape the Senate’s balance.”
The New Hampshire race is between Republican former governor John E. Sununu and Democratic challenger Mary Morrissey, a state senator who has gained traction among progressive voters. Sununu’s experience as governor and his moderate stance on certain issues have made him a strong contender, prompting concerns among Democratic strategists that a loss could tilt control of the Senate.
Pappas called for a coordinated effort from the Democratic National Committee to provide Sununu’s campaign with additional staff, data analytics, and targeted advertising. “National attention and resources can level the playing field,” he noted. “We need to ensure our messaging reaches every precinct and that we’re not just waiting for the outcome.”
The Senate race has seen a surge in campaign spending from both sides, with early polling showing a narrow lead for Sununu. Pappas added that the Democratic Party’s commitment to the race could influence voter turnout in early primary states, including New Hampshire, which often sets the tone for the national contest.
New Hampshire voters will head to the polls on November 5 for the presidential election, with the Senate race on the same ballot. The outcome will be critical for Democrats seeking to maintain or regain a majority in the Senate, while Republicans aim to secure the seat and solidify their presence in the Northeast.
Pappas concluded his remarks by urging fellow Democrats to remain vigilant and proactive. “This isn’t a race we can afford to ignore,” he said. “The stakes are high, and every dollar, every volunteer, and every conversation counts.”
