Defending champ now 2nd in Varsity Maine girls lacrosse poll
Windham Climbs to Second in Latest Varsity Maine Girls Lacrosse Poll
The top of the Varsity Maine girls lacrosse rankings has held steady at No. 1, but a familiar challenger has finally broken through into the runner-up spot.
Kennebunk remains the unanimous pick for first place, collecting all six first-place votes for 87 points in the latest poll, which is based on games played through Tuesday, June 9. The Rams have occupied the top position in every Varsity Maine poll this spring, the lone blemish on their regular season coming in a May 19 loss to Windham.
The defending Class A champion Eagles have spent the weeks since that victory knocking on the door of the No. 2 spot. They received multiple first-place votes in each of the last two polls yet were held at third. That has now changed. Windham jumped to second this week with three first-place votes and 78 points, leapfrogging Thornton Academy, which slipped to third with 70 points.
The shift appears to have been triggered by events elsewhere on the field. On June 3, Cheverus rolled to an 18-10 win over Thornton, vaulting the Stags from fifth to fourth with 59 points. Thornton, the previous No. 2, dropped a spot as a result, making room for Windham's ascent.
Three teams that entered the postseason as No. 1 seeds in their respective classes sit among the top six in this week's poll: Kennebunk in Class A, Greely in Class B and Maranacook/Winthrop in Class C. Greely checked in at sixth with 48 points, while Maranacook/Winthrop held firm at fifth with 56 points, one behind Cheverus.
Despite Windham's move up in the Varsity Maine poll, the Class A postseason seedings have the Golden Trojans at No. 2 and the Eagles at No. 3. Falmouth landed seventh with 40 points, followed by Messalonskee at 19, Scarborough at 13 and Yarmouth at 11.
Five additional teams received votes but did not crack the top 10: Wells (7), Camden Hills (3), North Yarmouth Academy (2), Freeport (1) and Cony (1).
With the regular season in the books and the postseason underway, the next few weeks will go a long way toward determining whether the poll reflects the final order of business in Maine girls lacrosse. For now, the Rams sit comfortably on top, with the Eagles closing in from behind and a cluster of contenders, led by Thornton and Cheverus, hoping to make their own moves.
