Deering Rams Earn “Team of the Week” After Unbroken Defensive Streak
Deering, Maine – The Deering Rams have been named Varsity Maine’s boys team of the week, a recognition that comes after the squad secured three straight shutouts in the early part of the season. The award, bestowed by Varsity Maine each week during the fall sports season, highlights teams that have shown notable success stories, bounce‑back effort, or other accomplishments.
The Rams’ record is an unblemished 3‑0 after a 1‑0 victory over Gorham last Wednesday and a 1‑0 win against Biddeford this Saturday. The opening game of the season saw a 4‑0 rout of Windham, leaving Deering with a flawless defensive record and the confidence of a team that has yet to concede a single goal.
“We’ve been able to transition well, counter‑attack and win the ball off of counter‑presses, and then quickly attack to get those scoring opportunities,” coach Joel Costigan told reporters after the win over Gorham. “We have to make sure that we’re not a one‑dimensional team, and that’s not all we do, but we have a lot of chemistry up top with two of our captains, Christopher Richards and Miles Lawrence, who are playing as forwards.”
Defensive solidity was the key to the upset over the No. 2 team in the Varsity Maine poll at the time, Gorham. Kelen Michael’s assist set up Forlan Kindomba’s goal, and goalkeeper Linden McAuliffe made nine saves to keep the scoreline at 1‑0.
Deering’s strong start has pushed the Rams up to the second spot in this week’s Varsity Maine boys soccer poll. The ranking, released on September 15, places Deering behind only the reigning champions in the top position.
The weekly honors are chosen by Varsity Maine staff, who consider a range of factors. Athletes, coaches and athletic directors wishing to nominate their team may email Sports Editor Bill Stewart at [email protected] or Varsity Maine Editor Lee Horton at [email protected].
For the Deering Rams, the “team of the week” award underscores a season that has begun with disciplined defense and swift counterattacks—a combination that has already earned them a place among the state’s elite soccer programs.
