Deeply disappointed by Susan Collins’ reply on Biddeford shooting | Letter
100%

I wrote to Sen. Susan Collins in mid-July after the tragedy in Biddeford at the hands of ICE, as likely others did. I received my reply this week.

I was horrified to see that her “personal” letter to me was not an acknowledgment of the preventable awfulness of the incident but used as a highly inappropriate opportunity for the senator to engage in partisan politics.

Collins couldn’t resist the urge to write “Senate Democrats decided to walk away from the (reform) negotiation” and “Democrats rejected these (additional) reforms as well, setting back good faith efforts to make ICE more accountable.” She simply offered that she “understood” the anger and grief over the shooting.

I think it is cold and inhumane to reply to a letter recognizing a killing by a federal agent in our state with a pitch for how well Republicans have managed ICE.

And the senator didn’t even have the courtesy to state the man’s name, Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero. I cannot support someone who can’t even level with a constituent about a preventable death.
