Texas Senate Race: Dallas Voters Show Mixed Signals Ahead of Election Day

The 2024 Texas Senate contest between Democrat James Talarico and Republican Ken Paxton is heating up in the Dallas‑area, where the candidates are fighting to secure enough votes to offset the GOP’s strength in rural counties. A series of conversations with local residents and political observers paints a picture of a race that could hinge on voter enthusiasm, turnout, and the ability of Talarico’s campaign to win over key demographic groups.

Early‑Voting Numbers Raise Questions

GOP consultant Vinny Minchello told reporters before an appearance on The Will Cain Show that early voting in Dallas is favoring Paxton, though he cautions that the gap is not yet decisive. “We’re about 100,000 votes behind,” Minchello said, adding that “I do not like what I see in the early voting for Paxton.” When asked about early turnout among Black voters, the consultant said the numbers look “down,” a warning that could spell trouble for Talarico if the campaign cannot mobilize this crucial demographic.

A Portrait of Dallas Voters

At an upscale Dallas restaurant, Mark—an immigration attorney in his late fifties—shared his upbringing and political leanings. “My dad worked the railroad, made me go to college, we were LBJ Democrats,” he explained, noting that Talarico’s style is markedly different from past leaders like Johnson and Ann Richards. While he declined to reveal whom he would vote for—or even whether he would vote—Mark’s comments suggested that Talarico’s candidacy might appeal to voters disenchanted with Republican Ken Paxton, whom he does not view favorably.

Mark also remarked that the current race feels “different” from earlier campaigns such as Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 run. “This isn’t like when Beto ran,” he said, hinting that voter sentiment is not as energized as it was in the past.

In a breakfast meeting near the AT&T Discovery District, two Black men in their fifties—Jay and Darryl—offered contrasting views on the Senate contest. Jay told Fox News Digital that he expected a landslide for Talarico, saying, “Actually, I don’t think it’s going to be close, he’s going to kill it, because he can get people to flip over.” He added that Talarico would have struggled against Senator John Cornyn, but that the current environment favored the Democrat.

Darryl, however, was less optimistic. “Conservatives aren’t loud, they don’t march, they don’t act up, they paint their hair, but I think they are the silent majority,” he observed. Despite this skepticism, both men agreed that Talarico’s failure to reconcile differences with his primary opponent, Rep. Jasmine Crockett, was a problem, though Jay believed that Crockett’s support was limited to down‑ballot races.

Carlos, a hotel worker in Dallas who prefers to talk over a cigar, expressed a sense of political alienation. “Looking at the trajectory of America… I just don’t feel represented in any way,” he said. He lamented that the promise of “no wars” was unfulfilled, noting that his gasoline bill had risen despite assurances to the contrary. Though a fan of Joe Rogan, Carlos was not a Trump supporter but remained open to the possibility that the former president could influence his vote.

Debbie, a suburban mother who has voted for Democrats in the past, told Fox News Digital that she feels the state is being talked to “too much” by Talarico. “I’m a moderate, I have voted for Democrats, I voted for Beto, but Talarico just says so much crazy stuff, it's too much for Texas,” she said, underscoring the challenge of maintaining support among voters who may feel overwhelmed by the campaign’s messaging.

Campaign Strategies and Controversies

The Talarico campaign has faced scrutiny for its decision to skip a Bernie Sanders rally in Texas, opting instead to hold separate events. Critics argue that the move signals a reluctance to align with progressive forces that could broaden the candidate’s appeal. The campaign’s inability to mend fences with primary opponent Jasmine Crockett—who remains on the ballot—has also been cited as a weakness that could siphon votes from the Democratic column.

On the Republican side, Paxton’s campaign has leveraged national issues such as the rise in gas prices and the possibility of civil unrest—referencing incidents in France—as talking points. The GOP has also emphasized concerns over unchecked immigration, a strategy that has resonated with some voters who worry about the social and economic impact of such policies.

Polling and the Road Ahead

A Fox News poll released earlier this week frames the contest as a “lone star Senate showdown” between Talarico and Paxton. While the poll shows a close race, it also highlights the importance of turnout in Dallas and the need for Talarico to energize the electorate. If early voting trends continue to favor Paxton, the Democratic candidate may need to double down on voter outreach, particularly among Black communities and suburban moderates, to stay competitive.

The final count on election day will come down to whether Talarico can convert enthusiasm into votes. As the campaign season progresses, both sides will likely intensify efforts to sway undecided voters, address policy concerns, and secure the support of key demographics.

A Race That Depends on the City

With the Texas Senate race so tight, Dallas could be the deciding factor. Republicans have long relied on rural turnout, while Democrats hope to close the gap with urban and suburban voters. The early voting numbers and voter sentiments captured in these conversations suggest that the outcome remains uncertain. As November approaches, all eyes will be on whether Talarico’s campaign can galvanize a broad coalition to overcome the GOP’s rural advantage and win Texas’ Senate seat.
