Danbury comeback delays Sanford’s bid for NECBL title
The Danbury Westerners hit two home runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to complete their comeback from a five-run deficit as they stayed alive in the New England Collegiate Baseball League championship series by defeating the Sanford Mainers 8-7 on Tuesday night in Danbury, Connecticut.
Sanford was in position to sweep the best-of-three finals after winning the series opener 3-1 on Sunday at Goodall Park. Game 3 is at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday in Sanford.

The Mainers grabbed a 5-0 lead in Game 2 with a five-run second inning, on RBI singles by Steven Kraus, Brennan Staubley, Antonio Morales, Jacob Harring and Brian Connolly.
After five scoreless innings by Sanford pitcher Charlie Hale, Danbury struck for two runs in the sixth, but Sanford’s Albert De La Rosa answered with a two-run double in the seventh.
The Westerners then rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh before Sanford reliever Samuel Young induced a popup with the bases loaded.
The Mainers carried their 7-6 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Ronan Donohue tied the game with a one-out home run. Two batters later, Garrett McGovern ended the game with a drive over the fence in right center.
Connolly, a Cheverus High graduate from Brunswick, reached base six times for Sanford, including three hits and two walks.
