Minnesota Pastor Dies After Spinal Injury Sustained on Cruise Ship in Italy

A 55‑year‑old minister from Elbow Lake, Minnesota, died on September 4 after suffering a severe spinal cord injury on a cruise in the Mediterranean. Pastor Steve Junker, who had spent part of his life as a pharmacist before turning to ministry, was celebrating his son’s wedding aboard the Sun Princess when a fall in a pool led to a tragic chain of events.

The incident occurred on August 16. According to a GoFundMe page organized by the family, Junker fell in a ship’s pool, was found face‑down and unresponsive, and was later attended by the crew’s medical team. Princess Cruises confirmed the death in a statement to the press. “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our guest and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this extraordinarily difficult time,” the cruise line said. “The guest was attended to by the ship’s medical team and subsequently transferred ashore for further care.”

The ship’s crew alerted shore authorities, and an Italian Coast Guard vessel transported the pastor to a hospital in Naples. He was admitted to the intensive‑care unit and underwent emergency spinal surgery the following day, August 17. While the operation was deemed successful, his spinal cord injury remained severe.

Junker’s family faced a daunting logistical challenge in arranging continued care overseas. “We are working through the medical, logistical and financial challenges of arranging appropriate medical transport and getting him to a hospital in the United States,” the family wrote on Facebook. After nearly a week in Italy, he was flown to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on August 23 for additional treatment.

Despite the best efforts of medical teams, the injury proved fatal. Junker died on September 4, surrounded by relatives, according to posts on Facebook. “Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every prayer, message, phone call, kind thought, and offer of support,” the family wrote in gratitude.

Junker’s life had been marked by service. He worked as a pharmacist before feeling the call to ministry, and was known in his community for his compassion. He left behind a wife, five children and their spouses, a grandchild, and many other family members.

His church, Chippewa Lutheran, took to Facebook to honor his memory. “Pastor Steve was a wonderful person, loved by many, and had a great impact on many people through his faith,” the church posted. A tribute from Nathaniel Junker, the pastor’s son, added, “He closed his eyes to this life and opened his eyes to Jesus.” Friends and mourners echoed these sentiments, one writing, “May God bring comfort for all who loved and care for Pastor Steve Junker. I’m so sorry for your loss.”

The tragedy has drawn attention to the risks that can accompany long‑haul travel, even for healthy adults. While the exact cause of the fall remains under investigation, the incident underscores the importance of swift medical response and the challenges families face when dealing with overseas medical emergencies.

As the community mourns the loss of a beloved pastor and former pharmacist, his legacy of faith, service, and love for others continues to resonate among those who knew him.
