Cumberland will purchase a 24-acre parcel abutting Twin Brook Recreation Area, expanding the town-owned park’s size by about 10%.

Town Manager Matt Sturgis said that the land’s owners approached the town to see if their property could be added to the park and preserved for the public to enjoy.

The parcel consists primarily of woods, rolling hills and streams, said Sturgis, adding variety to the recreation area’s many fields.

After some negotiation, the landowners and town agreed on the price of $85,000. It will be paid using the town’s land acquisition fund, which is generated by impact fees. Having discussed the acquisition previously in executive session, the Town Council authorized Sturgis to execute a purchase and sale agreement on behalf of the town at a meeting Tuesday night.

“It’s going to be something we only have the opportunity to get once,” said Councilor Geoff Michalak.

Twin Brook Recreation Area is a 224-acre, four-season park that offers 4 miles of trails for hiking, which are groomed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. It also contains 22 acres of athletic fields for soccer, baseball and softball, as well as a disc golf course.
