Comedy stars lash out at Sebastian Maniscalco over SiriusXM shake-up

SiriusXM’s Rebranding of Raw Comedy to Sebastian Maniscalco’s Channel Draws Strong Reactions From Comedians
SiriusXM’s decision to rename its long‑running “Raw Comedy” channel to “Sebastian Maniscalco’s Comedy Radio” has ignited a spirited debate within the comedy community. The move, announced in April of this year, has shifted the station’s lineup from a diverse roster of over 800 emerging comics to a handful of well‑known performers, sparking accusations that the change has deprived many up‑and‑coming comedians of crucial income and exposure.
A Dramatic Shift in Playlists
The original Raw Comedy channel, known for giving a platform to lesser‑known talent, was said to have played more than 800 comedians on a monthly basis. The new format, according to a recent Stand Up for Stand Up report, now curates a significantly smaller group—less than 300—of artists. The nonprofit’s analysis further notes that more than three‑quarters of the plays go to the top 50 performers, concentrating royalties and audience reach in the hands of a few big names.
“We’re seeing a drastic narrowing of the pool, and 75 percent of the spins are going to the top 50 artists,” the report said, adding that the change “hurts passive revenue, discoverability, and the infrastructure that supports up‑and‑coming comedians.”
Comedians Speak Out
Matt Ruby, a comedian who has posted his concerns on Substack, described the new channel as “crushing middle‑class comedians who rely on payments from the company to pad income.” He and others have argued that the shift leaves many performers with little to no chance of earning from a platform that once promised steady royalties.
In an Instagram video, Liz Miele criticized the rebrand, noting: “This year, the Raw channel on SiriusXM became Sebastian Maniscalco’s channel. Great. Fine. Celebrities have taken over channels before. Never been an issue. The problem is Raw went from playing 800 working‑class comedians to now playing less than 300 celebrity comedians like Joan Rivers, Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Norm Macdonald. Just dead comic, dead comic, dead comic, and then a plethora of very famous alive comedians that might not even know about this extra income that they’re about to receive.” Miele added that every “working‑class comedian that has been kicked off the channel is quite aware” of the money they’ve lost.
Gianmarco Soresi shared a photo of Maniscalco on X with the caption, “Aren’t you embarrassed?” While Ashley Ray posted that her checks “went from covering a car payment to barely covering a quarter of weed,” she expressed a strong dislike for the change.
Calls for Change from Big‑Name Comics
Several high‑profile comedians have used social media to urge Maniscalco to reverse the decision. Patton Oswalt recorded a Facebook video saying, “I know you didn’t mean to do anything bad by doing it. You can easily reverse this decision. Get those young comedians back on the Sirius channel.” Michelle Wolf and Margaret Cho followed suit, each urging Maniscalco to “give working comedians a chance” and to “change” the channel’s direction.
Defenders of the New Format
Not all comments have been critical. Some X users defended the move, stating, “Sirius radio did this not Sebastian,” and noting that the decision was an organizational one rather than a personal one by Maniscalco. Others argued that the channel’s name is simply a branding choice, and that the legacy of “Raw Dog” and its eclectic lineup should be remembered.
SiriusXM’s Response
SiriusXM issued a statement explaining the rationale behind the rebranding. The company said, “SiriusXM works together with our creative partners to program the best possible experience for our listeners. The launch of Sebastian Maniscalco’s Comedy Radio introduced a new creative direction and a regularly evolving programming mix for the channel, and SiriusXM continues to invest in comedians more than any other audio platform to deliver a wide range of comedy offerings across our channels.” A press release from April mentioned that the channel would be “curated and headlined by Maniscalco.”
Awaiting Further Comments
