Collins should spare us the concern over shock gloves | Letter

I just read an article about Sen. Susan Collins’ disapproval of ICE’s plan to use the additional $70 billion of funding — that she supported — to buy electric gloves to shock immigrants, people of color or anyone else its agents feel like abusing. She seemed surprised that the Trump regime would use the funding this way.

Susan Collins must have her head in the sand. By now it is evident to all but the willfully ignorant that the Trump regime — and ICE in particular — have a deep-rooted disdain for following the law or the Constitution.

They believe it is justified to use violence recklessly and abusively, as we have seen not only in places like Minnesota and Texas, but also here on the streets of Biddeford, where an ICE agent blithely executed Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a legally present and hard-working immigrant.

Now, Sen. Collins professes shock at ICE’s plans to deploy shocking gloves. Once again, she demonstrates astonishing naïveté and credulousness. The brutality, cruelty and racism of ICE are features, not a bug.

It was obvious that sooner or later ICE would come up with a new way to abuse its victims. Susan Collins should spare us her performative hand-wringing over the electric shock gloves and call for the abolition of ICE.
