Collins absolutely deserves blame for Biddeford ICE killing | Letter

100%
The July 24 op-ed by Rep. Donald Ardell (“Assess ICE instead of trading blame”) — arguing that Sen. Susan Collins should not be held accountable for the killing of Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero — might have made sense if the Biddeford shooting had been a one-of-a-kind incident that took everyone by surprise. But that is hardly the case.
Here are some relevant items, all of which happened before Sen. Collins voted to give ICE $70 billion, that Rep. Ardell left out of his analysis:
- ICE murdered two peacefully protesting American citizens in Minnesota, with no apparent accountability or cooperation with local authorities.
- Countless law-abiding legal residents have been terrorized, detained and, in some cases, deported.
- ICE refuses to behave like a legitimate law enforcement agency by identifying themselves, wearing badges and uniforms, and following due process.
- Our bellicose president defends any and all ICE actions.
Given these factors, is fair to hold Sen. Collins responsible for the death of an innocent man in Biddeford? You betcha!
