Colby College football coach Jack Cosgrove takes temporary leave to care for family member

Waterville, Maine – Colby College announced Saturday that head football coach Jack Cosgrove will be stepping away from the program on a temporary basis to provide care for a family member whose health has taken an unexpected turn. In a statement released to the press, the college said Cosgrove “has temporarily stepped away to prioritize providing care for a family member facing unforeseen health concerns.”

Cosgrove, who has led the Mules since December 2017, is expected to return when the situation stabilizes. In his tenure, he has compiled a 26‑41 record and guided the team to a 6‑3 season last year, the program’s first winning record since 2005.

While Cosgrove is away, offensive coordinator Mark Clements will serve as the interim head coach. Clements was on the sidelines when the Mules faced Amherst in a home game this past Saturday; the Mules opened the second quarter with a 12‑0 lead but ultimately lost 21‑15, falling to an 0‑5 start for the season. Defensive coordinator Liam Hobbins will assume the role of associate head coach in addition to his current duties.

The Mules are set to travel to Hamilton for their next contest, a matchup that will take place at noon on Saturday. Hamilton is currently 1‑4 in the league.

Cosgrove’s career before Colby included a long stint at the University of Maine, where he served as head coach from 1993 to 2015. During that period he led the Black Bears to three Coastal Athletic Association (formerly Colonial Athletic Association) titles and guided them to five Football Championship Subdivision playoff appearances.

Colby College expressed gratitude for Cosgrove’s contributions and pledged to support him and his family during this challenging time. The university also emphasized its commitment to maintaining competitive stability for the Mules under the interim coaching arrangement.

Colby’s decision comes amid a season that has been difficult for the program. The Mules’ 0‑5 record after the Amherst loss marks the lowest point of the season, but the coaching staff remains focused on building toward a stronger performance in the games that remain.

The college will monitor Cosgrove’s situation and keep the community informed of any updates. For now, fans and players alike will rally behind the interim coaching team while awaiting news on the head coach’s return.
