CMMC to conduct moment of silence for Lewiston shooting anniversary at exact time of first victims arrival

Lewiston, Maine – The city’s emergency department will observe a moment of silence at 7:24 p.m. this week, the exact time the first victim of the 2021 Lewiston shooting arrived in the hospital’s emergency department.
The announcement, issued by the hospital’s communications office, says the brief pause will be a tribute to the residents who were hurt during the mass shooting that took place in Lewiston’s downtown on June 20, 2021. Three people died and several others were injured when a gunman opened fire in a local business. The first victim to be transported to the emergency department was brought in at 7:24 p.m., a time that the hospital has chosen to mark in remembrance.
“The moment of silence is a simple way for the hospital community to honor the lives lost and to acknowledge the lasting impact this tragedy has had on Lewiston,” the hospital’s statement read. It added that staff, patients and visitors will be invited to observe the pause.
The hospital has not indicated whether it will hold a formal ceremony or provide any additional services on the anniversary. The focus is on the moment itself, which will be observed by all who are present in the emergency department at the appointed time. Patients in other wards will also be notified of the event by their nurses.
Lewiston officials have previously spoken about the ongoing effects of the shooting on the town’s sense of safety and the importance of community solidarity. The event will serve as a reminder of the collective grief and the resilience that has followed the tragedy.
The moment of silence will take place on the hospital’s main emergency department floor. Those who wish to participate may do so by standing in the designated area and closing their eyes for a brief pause. The hospital will remain open for patients and families during the rest of the evening, as usual.
