Cape Elizabeth Department of Public Works extended free brush removal at the transfer station through Aug. 28, a week longer than originally planned.

In South Portland, residents can drop off brush, branches, logs and small stumps at the transfer station for free each day until 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Clean-up efforts are ongoing after a series of intense storms toppled trees and downed power lines in the southern suburbs of Portland last Thursday. Dozens of homes were damaged, thousands lost power and roads were closed across South Portland and Cape Elizabeth. Central Maine Power installed 40 new telephone poles in Cape Elizabeth in the wake of the storm, according to Cape Elizabeth Town Manager Pat Fox.

The city of South Portland responded to more than 60 tree calls on Aug. 13, and the Cape Elizabeth Fire Department received 54 calls about downed trees or telephone wires. Both municipalities braced for and launched into ongoing recovery work.

Cape Elizabeth’s public works crew will spend the next week removing fallen debris from the public right of way, and the town will hire contractors to remove hanging limbs or trees that could become dangerous in the next storm, Fox said.
