China exile-turned-GOP nominee warns socialist surge could give Beijing greater influence in Washington

Republican candidate warns Chinese influence could grow if Democrats control Congress
Lily Tang Williams, the Republican nominee for New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, told Fox News Digital that a Democratic‑led House and Senate could create openings for Beijing to expand its reach in Washington. She warned that a shift toward “socialist” policies and a growing Democratic Socialist movement could threaten U.S. national security.
Williams, a former resident of China who left the country after the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, said in the interview that she “fear[s] that the country I love is becoming the country I left.” She argued that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) would welcome a Democratic majority in Congress, noting that the party’s “open‑border, police‑defunding and property‑abolishing” platform is “good news” for the CCP.
She cited a recent trip by more than a dozen Democratic Socialist of America (DSA) members to China, claiming that the delegation “produced favorable coverage of China and its regime.” Williams said the DSA’s ideology now “shares a similar ideology” with the CCP and warned that the party’s influence in the Democratic Party could shape congressional decisions, even if Democrats remain in the minority.
“We’re going to have a DSA‑run Congress, whether moderate Democrats like it or not,” Williams said. “Moderate Democrat voters are still so complacent. They don’t come out and condemn this extremism because they may even be afraid of repercussions from the DSA and DSA voters.”
The Republican candidate also warned that Democrats’ immigration policies could ease the entry of Chinese intelligence operatives. “Our country could fall from within, because we don’t really have a good policy to protect ourselves and our national security,” she said, citing “the possibility that at least six new DSA‑affiliated lawmakers could enter Congress in January.”
Williams said a Gallup poll found that 43 percent of Americans had a positive view of socialism, the first time a majority has expressed such sentiment since 2010. She argued that the rise in support for socialism could pave the way for DSA‑aligned legislators who “sympathize with the CCP and its Marxist principles.”
The Republican also criticized her Democratic opponent, Representative Maggie Goodlander, for refusing to condemn Marxism and for failing to denounce “Marxist American figures” such as New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Williams called Goodlander’s position “very troubling” and said that her refusal to condemn Marxism could “make our country fall from within.”
Goodlander, the DSA and the Democratic Party did not respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment.
The 2nd Congressional District, which includes much of central New Hampshire, will be decided in the November 5, 2024 election. Williams’ warnings reflect a broader debate among conservatives about the influence of foreign powers and left‑wing politics on the U.S. government. Whether her concerns will sway voters remains to be seen as the campaign season heats up.
