Chiefs' Tyquan Thornton didn't realize his foot was pointing the wrong direction after game-changing catch

Chiefs’ Tyquan Thornton Sidelined by Serious Ankle Injury in 30‑27 Win Over Raiders
In a closely contested Sunday matchup, the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the Las Vegas Raiders 30‑27, but the game ended on a painful note for Chiefs wide receiver Ty Quan Thornton. While the Chiefs secured a 4‑0 start to the season, Thornton’s ankle injury will keep him out of upcoming games.
The injury occurred with the Chiefs trailing 19‑17 and only 3:25 left on the clock. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes launched a deep pass down the left sideline. Thornton made the catch for a 55‑yard gain, setting up a short run for teammate Kenneth Walker that put Kansas City in front. On the following play, Raiders safety Treydan Stukes tackled Thornton from behind, landing on the player’s left ankle. The tackle caused the ankle to twist in an unnatural direction, leaving Thornton unable to continue.
Medical staff rushed to the field, placed Thornton’s left leg in an air cast, and carried him off the field in a stretcher. Officials announced that the injury would rule him out, but a more specific diagnosis was not released at the time of the report.
CBS play‑by‑play commentator Jim Nantz and former NFL player J.J. Watt both reacted visibly to the replay of the tackle. “Oh, no,” Watt said. “I don’t even want to look at it,” Nantz added, describing the play as a “heck of a moment.”
Thornton, who was drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2022 draft, spent time on the Chiefs’ practice squad in November 2024 before earning a roster spot in 2025. He re‑signed in March after recording 19 receptions for 438 yards and three touchdowns last season. In the game against the Raiders, Thornton finished with five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns, marking the first 100‑yard game of his career. He had also accumulated 108 receiving yards in the two games preceding Sunday.
The Chiefs entered the game without veteran receiver Rashee Rice, who exited in the first quarter with a right hamstring injury. Rice had amassed 190 receiving yards through the first three games of the season. With both Rice and Thornton sidelined, Kansas City’s passing attack will be missing two key contributors.
Despite the setback, the Chiefs’ offense managed to secure the win. After Thornton’s 55‑yard catch and the ensuing run by Walker, the Chiefs held on to a 30‑27 victory, improving to 4‑0 on the season. The game showcased the resilience of the Chiefs’ offense and highlighted the impact of Thornton’s play before the injury.
The Chiefs’ medical staff will continue to evaluate Thornton’s condition, and the team will release a more detailed update once a formal diagnosis is available. In the meantime, the Chiefs will have to navigate the rest of the season without one of their emerging offensive talents.
