Suspicious Letters Reach U.S. Congress Offices Across the Nation, No Injuries Reported

A letter containing an unidentified white powder was delivered to the Portland office of U.S. Representative Chellie Pingree last Monday, adding to a growing list of suspicious mailings that have reached members of Congress in recent days. The envelope, addressed to Pingree, was marked with a return address that read “DSA” and included a street number in New York City’s financial district, but investigators have not yet linked it to any known source.

The FBI, along with Portland Police and the fire department, responded to the incident. Pingree issued a statement condemning the threat and reaffirming her support for the public servants who staff congressional offices and conduct elections. “We cannot accept threats and intimidation as a normal part of our politics,” she wrote. “Political disagreement is part of a healthy democracy. Threatening the people who keep it running is unacceptable.” She added that her office’s staff and the federal investigators were working together to determine the origin of the package.

Pingree’s letter is not an isolated event. Since last week, congressional offices across the country have reported receiving similar packages, many of which also contain an unknown white powder. Among those affected are Senator Susan Collins of Maine, Senator Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas, and Senator Chuck Schumer of New York—two dozen recipients nationwide, according to NBC News. No injuries have been reported from any of the mailings.

The letters have triggered heightened security protocols for the offices involved, and investigators have yet to identify the sender or the intended target. As the investigation continues, officials urge anyone who may have knowledge of the origins or purpose of the packages to come forward.

For Representative Pingree, the incident comes as she prepares for her campaign for a tenth term representing Maine’s deep‑blue 1st District. She faces Republican challenger Ronald Russell in the upcoming election, but polls show her with a decisive lead.

The federal response and the political context underscore the broader concern about threats to elected officials. As Congress and the public work to maintain the integrity of democratic institutions, officials across the country remain vigilant against intimidation and violence.
