Catholic League's McDonald to Newsmax: Religious Documentary 'Powerful'
Catholic League Calls for Political Action After Newsmax Documentary on Religious Freedom Violations
A documentary that debuted on the Newsmax network this past Sunday has drawn the attention of the Catholic League, whose executive director, Michael McDonald, urged Americans of faith to become more politically engaged in order to safeguard their constitutional rights.
McDonald, speaking at a press conference in Washington, D.C., described the film as a “tremendous exposure of Americans whose religious freedoms have been infringed upon.” He said the documentary, which features a series of personal testimonies and legal analyses, illustrates how certain governmental actions and court rulings are perceived to violate the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious liberty.
“The religious freedom of our nation is at stake,” McDonald warned. “If we do not become more politically active, we risk losing the protections that have been the cornerstone of American liberty for centuries.” He called on members of faith communities across the country to take an active role in supporting legislation and judicial appointments that uphold the constitutional right to practice religion without undue interference.
The Catholic League, a national organization that monitors religious freedom and civil liberty issues, has previously expressed concern over a range of policies it views as hostile to religious groups. In this latest effort, the League has partnered with the documentary’s producers to promote the film’s release and to organize a series of town‑hall discussions and lobbying initiatives.
The Newsmax documentary premiered at 9 p.m. EST on Sunday and is available for streaming on the network’s website. Viewers can access the full feature at the request of the Catholic League, which is using the documentary as a platform for its advocacy campaign.
