Lewiston rallies for 2026 election as volunteers step up to canvass

Falmouth, Maine – In the run‑up to the 2026 state election, a local volunteer in Falmouth traveled to Lewiston to join a group of Democrats canvassing for their candidates. The effort, highlighted by a letter to the editor in the Press Herald, underscored the collaborative spirit the candidates are hoping to bring to a politically divided state.

The volunteer, identified only as Lillian Harris, said she was drawn to Lewiston because several candidates were scheduled to speak and canvass in the city. “I live in Falmouth, but I was drawn to Lewiston because several candidates were scheduled to be speaking and canvassing alongside us,” she wrote.

The candidates in question include state senator Hannah Pingree, state representative Troy Jackson, state representative Matt Dunlap, and Lewiston’s mayor, Carl Sheline. Pingree lightened the mood with a joke about Jackson wearing shorts during a freezing morning, while Dunlap reminded volunteers that canvassing is an opportunity to “let people know they matter.” Jackson praised his collaborative work with Pingree and Dunlap in the state legislature, and Sheline encouraged voters to support local representatives.

“These candidates are embodying teamwork in a time of division,” Harris said. She added that the experience of door‑knocking—though intimidating—was restorative, allowing her to meet neighbors and listen to the issues that matter most to them. “If anger and disillusionment are getting voters down, I invite them to join me.”

The letter, posted online with the tag “election 2026,” reflects a broader push by the Maine Democratic Party to energize volunteers and voters in the months leading up to the election. While the volunteer’s voice is personal, her observations echo a campaign strategy focused on grassroots engagement and community building.
