California nurse's husband claimed ICE took her — now he's charged with murder

Murder Charge Filed in Sacramento After Wife’s Remains Discovered 70 Miles Away
By Maine News Now
A 28‑year‑old man from Sacramento, California, has been arrested and charged with murdering his 30‑year‑old wife after authorities discovered her burned and buried remains in El Dorado County. The case, which has drawn national attention, is the result of a month‑long investigation that began when the wife went missing on September 30.
A Disappearance That Sparked a Search
Jasmine Gill, a registered nurse who had recently relocated to the United States from India, vanished on the last day of September while on a routine trip to the mail office near her home. Her cousin filed a missing‑person report on October 4 after the woman failed to return home. Sheriff’s Office detectives quickly began looking for clues.
“As the investigation progressed, we identified several inconsistencies in Gurinder’s statements about his wife’s disappearance,” said Sgt. Edward Igoe, a spokesperson for the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office. “These inconsistencies prompted us to dig deeper.”
A False Lead and the Role of ICE
When police first questioned Gurinder Gill, the husband claimed that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents had arrested his wife while she was bringing in the mail. Detectives called ICE to verify the claim. ICE confirmed that no enforcement activity had taken place at the residence.
“We detached the investigation from the claim that ICE was involved, and we confirmed that no enforcement activity occurred at the home.**” Igoe explained.
Remains Found in a Vineyard
On October 1, investigators located a burned and buried body in a shallow grave in a vineyard in El Dorado County, roughly 70 miles from the couple’s Sacramento home. DNA testing linked the remains to Jasmine Gill, confirming the tragic outcome of the missing‑person investigation.
The discovery prompted authorities to issue search warrants at two other locations tied to Gurinder Gill. On October 14, he was arrested in Sacramento and charged with the murder of his wife. He is currently held without bail.
A Family Trapped in Loss
Jasmine Gill was born in India, where her mother still lives. A GoFundMe page set up by her family has raised more than $21,000 to facilitate the return of her remains to her mother and to support her eight‑month‑old son. The campaign’s description reads:
“She was fighting for a better future for herself and her baby. She was seeking a divorce. She was trying to find the freedom, safety, and fresh start they both deserved. Tragically, before she could build that future, Jasmine was murdered, leaving behind the very child she was fighting so hard to protect.”
Legal Proceedings Ahead
Gurinder Gill faces a murder charge and is ineligible for bail while awaiting trial. The case is expected to unfold over the coming months as prosecutors build a case based on forensic evidence, witness statements, and the timeline of events that began when Jasmine vanished and ended with her tragic death.
The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office has pledged to keep the public updated as new developments arise in this case.
