Alhambra, Calif. — A routine traffic stop on Valley Boulevard near the 710 Freeway turned into one of the biggest drug busts of the year when a police K‑9 sniffed out nearly 200 kilograms of cocaine hidden in an SUV filled with cardboard boxes.

The Alhambra Police Department said officers pulled a vehicle over after noticing an unusually large amount of cargo in the back. The driver, Julio Rangel of Huntington Park, was seen hauling a stack of cardboard boxes that appeared to outnumber even Amazon’s Prime‑Day shipments.

“At first, he said he was heading home to Huntington Park from his cousin’s house and that the boxes were not his,” the department posted on social media. Rangel later offered a different explanation, claiming he was transporting diesel parts to a friend’s shop. The driver’s changing stories raised suspicions and prompted officers to bring in K‑9 Otis and his handler for further investigation.

Otis, a highly trained narcotics detection dog, immediately alerted his handler to the presence of illegal substances. “Thanks to Otis’ top‑tier nose, he alerted to the vehicle, and officers discovered the SUV was packed with approximately 200 kilos of cocaine,” the Alhambra PD said.

The seized drugs are roughly 440 pounds of pure cocaine, a quantity that could fuel thousands of individual doses. Rangel was arrested on the scene, booked into the Alhambra Police Department jail, and faces charges that could carry significant prison time if he is convicted.

Police officials praised Otis for his role in the bust. “A round of a‑paws for our good boy, K‑9 Otis,” the department tweeted. Social media users chimed in, offering praise and jokes. One commenter wrote, “Give that dog a bone!” while another joked that Otis might one day become police chief.

The incident highlights the effectiveness of canine units in drug investigations. In California, K‑9 teams regularly assist officers in detecting concealed narcotics, often saving the day when human investigators can’t immediately see the hidden threats.

The Alhambra Police Department said it remains unclear why the stop was initiated, but the unusual cargo and driver’s evasive explanations led to a full investigation. The discovery of 200 kilograms of cocaine is among the largest single seizures in the county’s recent history.

Rangel’s arrest is expected to trigger further investigations into possible trafficking routes and additional shipments. Law enforcement officials say they are reviewing all evidence to determine whether other parties were involved and if the drug was intended for local distribution or a wider network.

The event has already generated buzz online. While some users celebrated Otis’s success, others noted how the dog’s keen sense of smell can’t be matched by technology alone. “No one escapes from the long paw of … the dog,” one commenter posted, emphasizing the indispensable role of K‑9 teams in modern policing.

For now, the Alhambra Police Department will continue to investigate the case, with the focus on ensuring that the seized cocaine does not reach the streets. Meanwhile, the community has taken a moment to recognize the unsung hero of the operation, Otis, whose nose once again proved invaluable in the fight against drug trafficking.
