Byron, the Maine Wildlife Park moose, dies at 13
The Maine Wildlife Park announced this week that its “beloved resident moose,” Byron, died over the weekend at the age of 13.
Byron’s death was due to natural causes “related to his advanced age,” the park said in a social media post on Monday, which included a video tribute.
In 2013, the then-calf “was found orphaned” by residents in the town of Byron, the park said. He was picked up by a local game warden and found a permanent home at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray.
“Over his 13 years with us, Byron welcomed nearly 2 million visitors,” the park said. “As a dedicated ambassador for his species, he brought joy, wonder, and wildlife education to guests from across the world, inspiring generations to appreciate and protect Maine’s native wildlife.”
Staff also formed a deep connection with the moose over their many years of caring for him.
“Byron’s presence made an indelible mark on our community and the staff who cared for him daily,” the park said. “Rest easy, big guy. You have left a legacy that will last a lifetime.”
On July 29, a resident black bear named Luvey died after suddenly collapsing at the park.
