Brunswick boys soccer runs away from Edward Little

Brunswick Dragons Roll Past Edward Little 5‑0 in Class A North Showdown
By Maine News Now – September 15, 2026
In a night that began with high expectations and ended with a decisive blowout, the Brunswick boys’ varsity soccer team defeated the Edward Little Red Eddies 5‑0 at Brunswick High School. The match, a Class A North encounter featuring two of the region’s final‑four undefeated squads, saw the Dragons dominate both the score sheet and the field.
Brunswick entered the game as the defending regional champions, carrying a record of 4‑0 in the season. They had already outscored opponents 23‑2 in their first four games. Edward Little, also undefeated, entered with a perfect record of 4‑0 but had struggled to generate scoring opportunities.
The Dragons’ offense clicked from the first minute. A direct free‑kick by senior Liam Rapoza at 21:55 gave Brunswick a 1‑0 lead, and with 10 seconds remaining on the clock, Oliver Gorchoff capitalized on a rebound to put his team ahead 2‑0. Rapoza added a second goal early in the second half, and Gorchoff finished the scoring streak with a third goal in the 48:05 minute, assisted by his younger brother, sophomore Reid Gorchoff. “It felt good, especially getting it from my little brother, that’s a first,” Oliver said. “I didn’t expect that, but it feels good. There’s a lot of chances with breakaways, and you’re not going to score them all, but it felt good, that one especially.”
Brunswick’s defense also performed strongly, with goalkeeper Declan Thebarge recording three saves. The team’s back line, which had endured injuries, remained solid, allowing just two goals against in the first four games. Coach Mark Roma praised the young players’ quick adaptation to the team’s tactics. “We have a lot of new faces this year, and adapting in preseason was a difficult task, but we’ve done it really well,” Roma said. “Our underclassmen have stepped up and played a really big role. Our back line, we’ve had a lot of injuries and they’ve stayed strong and haven’t conceded much.”
Physicality and discipline were prominent themes throughout the match. Six yellow cards were issued, and Edward Little senior Cooper Blair received a red card in the second half for a serious foul. “We talked about that at the half, and we knew it might come down to (physical play),” Roma explained. “We knew if we could match their intensity and physicality, I trusted my guys to be able to make a play. But (Edward Little) is very good, and we’re going to see them again. I guarantee you it won’t be 5‑0 the next game; they’ll have some answers for us.”
Despite the Dragons’ comfortable victory, senior Rapoza remained modest. “We thought it would be a close game, a 2‑1 or 3‑1 battle,” he said. “We’re excited to keep a clean sheet and get some momentum.” He contributed one of the goals and emphasized the team’s intent to remain competitive in future matchups.
The Dragons’ 5‑0 win extended their lead in the Class A North standings, while Edward Little’s season record now sits at 4‑1. The result also reinforced Brunswick’s position as a contender for the state title, a goal the team has pursued since last season’s Class A title game, in which Brunswick fell 2‑1 to Scarborough.
Statistical highlights from the match include Oliver Gorchoff’s three goals, Liam Rapoza’s goal, and Declan Thebarge’s three saves for Brunswick. Edward Little’s goalkeeper, Cameron Daigle, recorded eight saves, the most in the game.
As the season progresses, the Dragons will face a series of high‑stakes games that will test their resilience and depth. Coach Roma remains optimistic: “It’s easy to preach that, but hard to do.” With a strong defensive core and an offense that has found its rhythm, Brunswick appears well positioned to continue its pursuit of a state championship.
Brunswick’s victory was celebrated by the student body and the community, who cheered the team’s performance from the stands and on social media. The Dragons’ triumph underscores the region’s competitive spirit and the promise of the next generation of Maine soccer talent.
