Bridge under construction collapses in Old Town

A bridge under construction in Old Town collapsed on Thursday, injuring three people.
Old Town police Chief David White said in an email that one section of the new Llewellyn Estes Bridge, also known as the Stillwater Bridge, collapsed while concrete was being poured.
White said fire officials on scene treated three people for injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Several area agencies worked to remove an injured person and transport them to a hospital, the Milford Fire & Rescue Department said in a social media post.
The Maine Department of Transportation said in a statement that “portions” of the bridge collapsed shortly after 2 p.m. and that it was assessing the situation.

The bridge carries traffic on Stillwater Avenue over the Stillwater River. Construction work on a replacement bridge has been ongoing since 2023, according to the department’s website.
A temporary bridge was installed while the new permanent bridge is under construction. Old Town City Councilor Katrina Wynn said in a social media post that the temporary bridge is closed while officials assess the damage.
The Old Town Police Department asked people to avoid the area, but said in an update around 4:45 p.m. that roads had reopened.
Penobscot County Sheriff Troy Morton said his agency is assisting.
