Brewers’ Jacob Misiorowski Throws Fastest Pitch by a Starting Pitcher

In a dramatic opening‑inning duel at Miller Park, Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski became the first starting pitcher in Major League Baseball history to throw a pitch that surpassed 104 mph, recording a speed of 104.5 mph against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.

The pitch was delivered to Phillies leadoff hitter Kyle Schwarber as the ball was called 2‑2. Misiorowski’s fastball arced to the lower outside corner of the strike zone. Schwarber swung, missed, and the ball was snared by catcher William Contreras. While Schwarber contested the call, the crowd and media were captivated by the sheer velocity. The scoreboard initially displayed 105 mph, but the official measurement recorded 104.5 mph, setting a new benchmark for starting pitchers.

Misiorowski, who has often dubbed his right arm a “cannon,” was in the midst of an otherwise routine at‑bat for Schwarber. All five pitches delivered to the outfielder that inning were clocked north of 103 mph, with the third pitch—an official strike—also clocking 104 mph. Despite the speed, Schwarber did not appear to notice the extraordinary velocity, a testament to the sheer pace of Misiorowski’s delivery.

The record is specific to starting pitchers. The overall fastest pitch in MLB history remains a 105.8‑mph fastball thrown by reliever Aroldis Chapman during his rookie season with the Cincinnati Reds in 2010. Chapman also ranks second on the list with a 105.7‑mph fastball delivered while pitching for the Chicago Cubs in 2016.

Misiorowski’s 104.5‑mph throw underscores the increasing velocity trends among MLB starters and adds a new milestone to the Brewers’ pitching lore. The game, which saw the Brewers and Phillies trading runs throughout the contest, will be remembered for this historic display of speed.
