South Portland Resident Urges Vote for Boyd-Boffa, Richardson in School Board Race

SOUTH PORTLAND — A city resident is calling on voters to support Wheeler Boyd-Boffa and incumbent Eleni Richardson for the South Portland Board of Education, arguing in a published letter to the editor that the school department is in crisis and requires new leadership.

Ralph Cabana, of South Portland, wrote that the district faces a convergence of problems, including the closure of Kaler Elementary School, staff transfers and terminations, and what he described as a dire financial situation. He also criticized a district reconfiguration plan he labeled "hugely unpopular" and redistricting maps he called "absurd," asserting that students are being used "as pawns to achieve an unrealistic goal."

"To ensure that every student is treated with the same respect and consideration, we need their experience and level heads now more than ever," Cabana wrote of Boyd-Boffa and Richardson.

The letter, published in the Portland Press Herald, arrives as the district navigates a period of significant transition. The decision to close Kaler School was finalized earlier this year following a facilities assessment that identified extensive repair needs at the building. The closure is part of a broader reconfiguration effort intended to address declining enrollment and consolidate resources across the district's elementary schools.

That reconfiguration process has included redrawing attendance boundaries, a step that has drawn public scrutiny at recent board meetings. Some parents and residents have expressed concerns over increased travel times for students and the disruption of established neighborhood school communities. District officials have maintained that the changes are necessary to achieve equitable class sizes and sustainable operations given current budget constraints.

The school department has also grappled with personnel turnover. In addition to layoffs and non-renewals tied to budget adjustments, the district has managed a series of administrative transfers intended to align staffing with the new school configurations.

Richardson, who currently serves on the board, is seeking reelection. Boyd-Boffa is running as a challenger. The race is one of several contested seats on the seven-member board this cycle. Candidates have generally focused their platforms on budget stability, the implementation of the reconfiguration plan, and student mental health resources.

Election Day is scheduled for November.
