Bonny Eagle football holds off Massabesic to stay undefeated

Bonny Eagle football holds off Massabesic to stay undefeated
100%

Bonny Eagle’s senior quarterback, Lucas Klehn, produced a game‑dominating performance that lifted the Scots to a 27‑14 victory over Massabesic at Ronco Field Friday night. The win gave the Bonny Eagle a 3‑1 start to the season and kept them in second place in the state’s varsity football poll.

Klehn was involved in every one of Bonny Eagle’s four touchdowns, adding two passing scores and two rushing ones. He completed 7 of 10 passes for 91 yards, threw two touchdowns, and ran 16 times for 117 yards and two more scores. The senior also snared an interception in the defensive backfield. “It’s a gutty win today,” Klehn said after the game. “We knew it was going to be a physical battle… we knew our offense was going to score some points, but it wasn’t up to our standard today.”

The quarterback’s final run, a 12‑yard dash that knocked a Massabesic defender off his feet, was capped by a helmet that slipped off during the celebration. “We’re trying to do it all at the same time,” Cooper, Bonny Eagle’s head coach, told reporters. “Run it, pass it… He’s so tough, he’s such a warrior. He’s smart and heady, but also really tough.”

Klehn’s partnership with senior wide receiver Drew Gervais was a key element of Bonny Eagle’s offense. The duo connected on five passes, including two of the quarterback’s touchdowns, and Gervais finished with 61 yards and two scores. “When I’ve got a kid out there, the fastest kid in New England, it helps,” Klehn said of the 100‑meter champion. “If I put the ball anywhere in his vicinity, it’s probably going to be a catch. It’s a great feeling to have when I have a good connection with him.”

Massabesic, 2‑0 in the season, began the game with a 21‑6 lead at the half. A 56‑yard drive that consumed 9 minutes and 40 seconds of the clock yielded a 3‑yard touchdown run by senior Dustin Maley. The Mustangs then succeeded on a two‑point conversion run by quarterback Cooper Smith, reducing the deficit to 21‑14. Massabesic coach Cory Woodsome, in his first season at the helm, praised his team for staying in the game. “We did exactly what we said we wanted to do coming out of the half,” he said. “We get the ball back, take 10 minutes off the clock, score, make it a one‑possession game.”

Despite the drive, penalties and defensive stops stalled Massabesic’s comeback. “They came out tonight and played really, really hard,” Woodsome added. “They forced us to dig deep to be able to win.” The Mustangs’ offense finished with Alex Harriman rushing 16 times for 70 yards and Dustin Maley adding 11 carries for 54 yards, including his single touchdown.

Bonny Eagle’s offensive statistics were led by Klehn’s 4‑touchdown performance, Ben Noe’s 7 carries for 51 yards, and Gervais’s 5 receptions for 61 yards. On defense, Klehn’s interception kept the Mustangs from adding to their score.

In the coaching booth, Massabesic assistant coach John Morin—who led the program to its only Class A championship in 2000—joined Woodsome on the sidelines. The two had previously worked together when Morin was Woodsome’s assistant and when they both coached at Kingswood High School in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.

With the win, Bonny Eagle remains a top contender in the state and has drawn attention for its balanced attack and strong leadership on the field. Massabesic, meanwhile, will look to regroup and continue its winning streak as the season progresses.
