Maine Lobster Chef of the Year Competition Set for Oct. 16 at Harvest on the Harbor

Portland, Maine – Seafood fans and culinary professionals alike have a new reason to mark their calendars. On Friday, Oct. 16, Harvest on the Harbor will host the annual Maine Lobster Chef of the Year competition, a contest that pits rising culinary talent against seasoned local chefs in a battle of the best lobster dishes.

The event, organized by Harvest on the Harbor and backed by the Maine Lobster Association, will bring together a diverse lineup of chefs from across the state. Participants are expected to showcase their signature lobster preparations—from traditional New England boils to avant‑garde fusion recipes—while competing for the coveted title.

Judging panel and guest participation

The judging panel will comprise culinary heavyweight Iron Chef Jose Garces, Portland Press Herald food columnist Tim Cebula, and a representative from Shucks Maine Lobster. In a unique twist, the public will have the opportunity to sit on the judges’ table as a special guest judge, giving lobster lovers a direct role in deciding the winner.

“We’re excited to open the judging room to the community,” said event coordinator Marissa Kline. “It’s a chance for people to taste and evaluate the dishes that might shape Maine’s culinary future.”

Entry deadline and selection process

Chefs wishing to compete must submit their applications by Monday, Oct. 12. While the competition is open to all Maine‑based chefs, the selection process for the final field is random, according to the organizers. Participants who are selected will receive an invitation to the Oct. 16 event.

Prospective entrants can apply online through the competition’s official form at https://forms.gle/5SAfQjqze6bUqAV49. The application includes a short description of the lobster dish the chef intends to present.

A celebration of Maine’s lobster heritage

Harvest on the Harbor, located on Portland’s waterfront, has long been a hub for seafood lovers and culinary innovators. This year’s competition is positioned as a “must‑visit” event for anyone who appreciates the state’s iconic lobster, and promises a lively showcase of flavors, techniques, and creativity.

The winner of the competition will receive the title “Maine Lobster Chef of the Year” and an opportunity to represent the state at the national Maine Lobster Festival later in the year.
