Bangor police investigate amid influx of porch theft videos

Bangor Police Investigate Spate of Porch Thefts, Including $3,000 E‑Bike
Bangor Police are looking into a wave of porch thefts that have been reported in the city in recent days. Early calls to 911 described burglaries in which items left outside homes were stolen, with one incident involving a $3,000 electric bike that was taken from a porch in a residential area of the city.
The Department of Public Safety confirmed that investigators have begun a formal inquiry and are reviewing surveillance footage and police reports from the affected neighborhoods. Officers say they are treating each case with the same level of scrutiny as any other burglary or theft investigation.
Officials noted that the thefts appear to be opportunistic, occurring when homeowners leave valuables in plain sight on their porches. Police are urging residents to keep personal property off balconies or porches and to lock doors and windows even when they are home.
“Public safety is our top priority,” a spokesperson for the Bangor Police Department said. “We’re working to identify the suspect(s) and bring them to justice. If you have any information, please contact the department or use the anonymous tip line at 207‑XXX‑XXXX.”
The city has not yet identified a suspect, but officers are canvassing the area and speaking with neighbors to determine whether the incidents are linked or isolated. The Department has requested that anyone who believes they have been a victim of a porch theft or who has seen suspicious activity in the past week come forward.
City officials said the thefts could be part of a broader trend of property crimes seen in other parts of Maine, but no pattern has yet emerged in Bangor. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and to secure items such as bicycles, garden tools, and other valuables when they are outside.
Police will continue to investigate all reports of porch thefts, and the Department is working to increase patrols in the affected neighborhoods while it seeks to prevent further incidents.
