CMCA Names New Jurors for 2027 Biennial, Opens Call for Artists

The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) has announced the trio of jurors who will evaluate submissions for its 2027 Biennial exhibition. The panel will be chaired by CMCA curator Grant Wahlquist, with Nyeema Morgan and Haynes Riley joining him.

The Biennial is the longest‑running statewide juried show in Maine, showcasing the newest work by artists who live and work in the state or have strong ties to it. Applications are now accepted and will close on October 9 at 5 p.m. The competition is capped at 300 entries. Artists who maintain a full‑ or part‑time residency in Maine, or who have produced a significant body of work in the state within the past two years, meet the eligibility criteria. Collaborative groups may also apply as a single entry. More information, including application guidelines and frequently asked questions, can be found at cmcanow.org/2027-biennial.

The Jurors

  • Nyeema Morgan – A visual artist and assistant professor of sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Morgan earned a BFA from Cooper Union, an MFA from the California College of the Arts, and studied at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.

  • Haynes Riley – Riley is an artist, curator, designer, and the founder of Chicago‑based gallery Good Weather. He completed his MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art and also studied at The Mountain School of Arts.

  • Grant Wahlquist – The center’s curator, Wahlquist brings years of experience in contemporary art curation to the panel.

The Biennial is scheduled to take place at the CMCA’s headquarters in Portland, Maine, where visitors will see a broad range of contemporary works reflecting the state’s artistic pulse.

Supporting Partners

The event is supported by Bowdoin College and the Times Record. The college’s “Times Record Sustaining Sponsor” program underscores its commitment to community engagement, while the Times Record’s sponsorship highlights the importance of informed public discourse.

Artists and collectors eager to participate should review the eligibility criteria carefully and submit their work by the October deadline. For further details on the Biennial, including submission forms and guidelines, visit the CMCA website.
