Art Garfunkel, the 84-year-old musician born in New York City, told The Guardian in a September 4 interview that he is considering leaving the United States because he disapproves of the current administration’s direction.

“I don’t like America’s position at all,” Garfunkel said. “I’m not aboard, and I’m thinking of leaving the country, frankly.”

The folk-rock legend expressed concern about climate change, international affairs, and political issues. “It’s real that the planet is getting warmer, that the water’s rising, that so many people are starving,” he said.

Garfunkel also criticized the U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, who faces federal charges and is being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. “When Donald Trump took over Venezuela, are those the new rules? Just take over a country and run it?” he asked. He added, “It’s shocking, and you think, ‘How on earth are we gonna change the presidency?’ But Trump won’t last forever, so we’ve got to hope.”

Garfunkel joins a list of American celebrities who have relocated or threatened to leave the country. Comedian Rosie O’Donnell moved to Ireland after Trump’s 2024 election victory and returned briefly in August to guest-host “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Director James Cameron has long planned a permanent move to New Zealand, and Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi made their United Kingdom stay permanent following the election.

Democratic strategist Kaivan Shroff suggested Garfunkel’s remarks reflect genuine alienation rather than political branding. “He’s looking at the country he has lived in his entire life and saying, essentially, ‘I don’t recognize our role in the world anymore,’” Shroff said. He noted that given Garfunkel’s age and six-decade career, the comments don’t appear aimed at building a political brand.

Fox News Digital sought additional comment from Garfunkel.
