Arizona Voter‑Rights Groups Develop Online Map to Track Federal Agents Near Polling Stations

Arizona immigration‑rights advocates have announced plans to create an interactive online map that will alert voters whenever federal agents are detected near polling places during the upcoming fall elections. The effort, which is still in the development stage, aims to increase transparency and reassure voters that they can check for potential federal presence before casting their ballots.

The map will be updated in real time as reports of federal agents—such as U.S. Marshals, federal investigators, or other federal law‑enforcement officials—arrive at polling sites. Users will be able to view the current location of these agents on a map of the state, along with the number of agents and the duration of their presence. The initiative is expected to run throughout the fall election cycle, which includes the presidential primary, congressional races, and local ballot measures.

The project is part of a broader movement in Arizona to protect voting rights and address concerns that federal officials could influence the voting process. Immigration advocates say that federal agents sometimes participate in voter‑registration drives, and the group is wary that their presence could be used to intimidate voters, particularly those who are undocumented or belong to minority communities.

The map’s creators emphasize that the tool is not a call to boycott voting, but rather a way to empower voters with information. “We want to ensure that everyone has the knowledge to make informed decisions about where and when to vote,” a spokesperson for the group said. “By making the data publicly available, we hope to reduce any fear or uncertainty that might arise from seeing federal officials near a polling place.”

The online platform will also allow users to submit their own observations, adding to the crowdsourced data stream. According to the advocates, the map will be accessible on both desktop and mobile devices, allowing voters to check for federal activity from a phone or computer. The project will be built using open‑source mapping technology to facilitate rapid updates and public access.

While the initiative has received support from several civil‑rights organizations, it has also drawn criticism from some who worry that it could create confusion or contribute to a perception of federal overreach. Critics argue that federal officials often have legitimate reasons for being present at polling sites, such as providing assistance or ensuring the security of the voting process.

Arizona lawmakers and election officials have not yet commented on the project. The state’s Department of Elections is expected to release guidelines for federal agents who wish to participate in voter‑registration activities or assist with election logistics.

The map will launch sometime in September, ahead of the primary election held on March 5, 2024. Voters in Arizona will be able to access the tool to see if any federal agents are in the vicinity of their polling place and to decide whether to adjust their voting plans accordingly.

The project’s creators say that the map is designed to be a neutral resource, providing factual information without political persuasion. They hope that by making federal presence visible, voters will feel more confident about the integrity of the election process and less vulnerable to intimidation.
