Another change at top of Varsity Maine volleyball poll

Thornton Academy Claims Top Spot in Varsity Maine Volleyball Poll
Thornton Academy’s girls’ volleyball team has climbed to the summit of the Varsity Maine poll after a hard‑fought five‑set victory over last week’s No. 1, York, on September 24 in Saco. The win gave Thornton 86 points and six first‑place votes, pushing it ahead of Cheverus/Waynflete and Washington Academy.
Cheverus/Waynflete moved into second place with a 3‑2 win over Gorham, earning 77 points and three first‑place votes. Washington Academy, which beat Gorham 3‑1 on Saturday, earned a tie for fourth in the previous poll and now sits at No. 3 with 69 points. Greely also rose, shifting from sixth to fourth with 61 points after a recent victory over Washington and Messalonskee.
The updated rankings, which cover games played before Tuesday, Oct. 6, list the top ten teams as follows:
| Rank | School | First‑Place Votes | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Thornton Academy | 6 | 86 |
| 2 | Cheverus/Waynflete | 3 | 77 |
| 3 | Washington Academy | – | 69 |
| 4 | Greely | – | 61 |
| 5 | York | – | 57 |
| 6 | Gorham | – | 46 |
| 7 | Messalonskee | – | 26 |
| 8 | Scarborough | – | 23 |
| 9 | George Stevens Academy | – | 21 |
| 10 | Gardiner | – | 15 |
Other schools received votes but did not break into the top ten: Falmouth earned nine votes, Lewiston/Lisbon three, and Deering two.
A look at the season’s head‑to‑head results shows a tightly contested field: Thornton has victories over Cheverus/Waynflete, York, and Scarborough; Cheverus has beaten Greely and Gorham; Washington has toppled York and Gorham; Greely has defeated Washington and Messalonskee; York has won over Gorham and Gardiner; Gorham remains the only team to defeat Thornton, also beating Scarborough; and Messalonskee has a win over Gardiner.
The poll reflects the dynamic nature of Maine’s high‑school volleyball scene, with several teams trading wins and standings throughout the season. As the year progresses, the rankings will continue to shift based on upcoming matchups and conference play.
