Maine’s Largest 24/7 Veterinary Hospital Opens in Falmouth, Expanding Pet Care Across the Region

Falmouth, Maine – A sprawling 42,000‑square‑foot animal hospital, the biggest of its kind in New England, opened its doors on a cool Tuesday morning on a hill overlooking Route 1. Portland Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Care (PVE&SC) announced that the new facility will begin admitting pets on November 2, offering a full spectrum of medical services from cardiology to oncology, neurology and sports medicine.

The ribbon‑cutting ceremony was led by owner and chief veterinarian Marta Agrodnia, who told attendees, “My dream of this hospital has come true.” The event drew veterinarians, local officials and pet lovers from across the state. Agrodnia, who has been building the organization for years, emphasized that the hospital’s design prioritizes “patient care,” with quiet recovery areas, a dedicated cat ward and private rooms for owners to say goodbye to pets in end‑of‑life situations.

PVE&SC already operates two smaller clinics in Portland, but the new Falmouth location will house 33 exam rooms, six state‑of‑the‑art operating rooms and an additional 220‑person workforce. The clinic’s 24/7 operation will make it a key referral center, linking primary care veterinarians statewide to handle complex cases.

“Everybody I have dealt with here, the level of compassion and dedication is unbelievable,” said Susan Marshall, a Gardiner resident who has brought her cats to the Portland clinic for specialized care. “I can’t imagine going anywhere else.”

In addition to expanding veterinary services, the new site is part of a broader development plan along Route 1. Agrodnia and her husband own roughly 80 acres surrounding the hospital and have partnered with local developers to create housing, a childcare center and a fitness facility over the next several years, according to the long‑range planning director Adam Causey. “What a great business to welcome here in Falmouth now,” Causey remarked.

The opening also marked a shift for PVE&SC’s other locations: the Warren Avenue clinic will continue to offer urgent care and dentistry, while its Congress Street dermatology office will close as services consolidate at the larger facility.

The hospital’s arrival comes at a time of increasing demand for specialized pet care. With its comprehensive suite of services and a commitment to community integration, PVE&SC’s new Falmouth hospital is poised to become a cornerstone of Maine’s animal health landscape. Pets and their owners will have a state‑of‑the‑art resource right at the heart of the region, with a promise of compassionate, expert care around the clock.
