According to the World Population Review, the five happiest countries in the world are: Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and the Netherlands. A common factor these countries share is that they are all robust social democracies.

Social democracies are political democracies based on capitalist economies that emphasize using taxes and regulation to provide for a strong safety net and to reduce inequality. In exchange for a relatively high tax rate, citizens receive childcare, healthcare, education, retirement benefits and other social supports.

These policies are much like those proposed by the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. Despite being demonized by Republicans as communism or socialism (perhaps they should revisit their civics class to see how clearly different these forms of government actually are from each other), these ideas are quite popular among Americans. Interestingly, Americans poll negatively when asked how they feel about social democracy but positively when asked about the policies it promotes.

I’m sure some will point to the high taxes these citizens pay. If one stops to consider how much we already pay in taxes, plus for healthcare, childcare and education, however, I suspect the net cost for many Americans might actually be less under such a system.

The Republican playbook is to demonize ideas the party doesn’t support and create an exaggerated fear around those ideas so that we will reject them outright. But, judging from how satisfied residents of social democracies are with their lives, perhaps these are ideas well worth considering.
