Born on America's Darkest Day: A Generation Turns 25 Carrying a Unique Legacy

Every year on September 11, William Faber pauses before reaching for cake and candles. Instead of party gifts and festivity, the 25-year-old spends the date giving back to the people around him — a choice he made as a child after learning the true weight of the day he was born.

Faber is one of an estimated 13,000 babies born across the United States on September 11, 2001, a day that would become etched in American memory as one of its most tragic. Now a quarter century old, this small generation carries a birthdate that intersects with history in a deeply personal way, and their stories are the subject of a new Fox Nation documentary titled "Born on 9/11: 25 Years with Harris Faulkner."

The program follows several individuals born on that date, exploring how a birthday tied to one of the nation's most sorrowful chapters has shaped their values, their sense of purpose, and their connection to their communities. Among those featured is Faber, whose experience illustrates a quiet but powerful response to tragedy that has played out across two decades of his life.

His parents, according to Faber, initially tried to shield him from the significance of his birthdate. They wanted him to have a normal childhood celebration, filled with the joy and fun that every young child deserves. But that protection had a shelf life.

"When I got to be 10 years old, they told me the story," Faber explained in an interview featured in the documentary. "And so, ever since that day, I really haven't celebrated my birthday on that day."

The decision was not born from sadness alone but from respect — specifically, for a family friend who lost their life in the terror attacks, and for the nearly 3,000 others whose lives were taken that morning. Rather than marking the occasion with personal celebration, Faber shifted his birthday observance to another time of year and chose instead to dedicate September 11 to service.

"I want to volunteer, I want to give back to the community on that day. I'd rather not celebrate, I'd rather just do something to help the community as a whole," he said.

Faber's approach is one of several profiles examined in the documentary, which airs on Fox Nation and is available for streaming on demand. Host Harris Faulkner, who discussed the project during an appearance on the program "Outnumbered," emphasized the scale of the cohort: roughly 13,000 newborns brought into the world on September 11, 2001, alone.

The documentary explores how these individuals — now young adults coming of age in a country still grappling with the aftermath of 9/11 — have channeled the circumstances of their birth into acts of faith, community engagement, and civic responsibility. For many, the date is not merely a historical footnote they read about in school; it is woven into the fabric of their identity.

As the 25th anniversary of the attacks approaches, stories like Faber's offer a lens into how a generation that did not witness the events of September 11 firsthand has nonetheless been shaped profoundly by them. Theirs is a legacy carried not through memory but through meaning — a decision, made again and again each year, to honor loss with compassion.

"Born on 9/11: 25 Years with Harris Faulkner" is currently available for streaming on Fox Nation.
