Actively caring for one another is how we move forward | Letter

I woke up last night to the sound of thunder. For a split second, I thought it was gunshots. That realization shook me more than the storm itself, making me realize how much fear so many of us are carrying right now.

As I watch what is happening, I feel deeply concerned for local families living with uncertainty. My neighborhood moms’ group often shifts from planning playdates to asking who can deliver groceries or shelter families who are afraid. The contrast is sharp, but it is the reality many live daily.

At home, our summer plans mix with difficult conversations about safety. My partner and three of our four children have brown skin. Like every parent, I want my family to grow up safe, valued and treated with dignity. I know not everyone experiences this reality firsthand, but I hope we can all make room to listen to those who do, meeting one another with compassion.

If any person — or someone they know — needs help, our group of moms is ready to offer food, resources and community. If they are carrying fear or grief, they should know that they are not alone. I choose hope, and I choose to believe that actively caring for one another is how our community moves forward.
