New Playground Opens in Pleasantdale Neighborhood

South Portland — A new playground welcomed its first visitors this week in the Pleasantdale neighborhood, giving local families their first dedicated play space in years.

The playground, located at the corner of Elm Street and Forest Avenue, officially opened after two months of construction that began in June. The project faced some delays due to scheduling and installation issues, according to Anthony Johnson, deputy director of parks, recreation and the waterfront.

The city acquired the land in 2023 and immediately recognized an opportunity. The neighborhood had no playground, and parks officials identified a high concentration of families in the area who could benefit from such an amenity.

The construction was funded through a federal Community Development Block Grant, with the city providing a 10% match.

"A safe playground for our children is a wonderful community asset," Mayor Elyse Tipton said.

On an overcast Wednesday morning, Evan Hegarty pushed his three-year-old son Bode on one of the playground's spinning seats. The fresh scent of wood chips still hung in the air around the new equipment. The Hegartys, who live nearby, had been watching construction progress with anticipation.

"It's on the route of our morning jog," Hegarty said.

Less than half a day after their first visit, Bode was already asking to return.

The playground features a climbing structure, a rocking hammock-like swing, multiple spinning seats, and a slide. Bode made a beeline for the slide, climbing the stairs in his Crocs and launching down the plastic surface with giggles.

"One more time and then we have to go," his father gently urged.

Bode silently negotiated for more time, rushing up the stairs three more times before the pair finally headed home for breakfast.

Johnson noted that the playground will need to close for a few days in the coming weeks so crews can install a fence around the perimeter. That work is currently being scheduled.

Meanwhile, the city has opened pre-applications and applications for the next round of Community Development Block Grant funding. City departments, nonprofits, and local businesses can apply for funds that support public services, infrastructure, economic development, and neighborhood improvements.

City Communications Officer Shara Dee confirmed the application period is now active, with information available through the city's community development office.

For the Hegartys, the new playground has already become a morning ritual. They'll be back soon.
