Patriots’ Return‑to‑Home Debut for A.J. Brown Falls Short, but Team Holds Off Jets

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. – A much‑anticipated homecoming for former Tennessee star A.J. Brown ended in an uneven performance that left fans more skeptical than enthusiastic. The Patriots’ newest wide‑receiver acquisition, who joined the team in the offseason, played a full game against the New York Jets on Sunday and recorded a disappointing 27‑yard haul on 10 targets, missing three passes and an on‑side kick.

Brown, 29, had been sidelined with a high‑ankle sprain that placed him on injured reserve for the first four games of the season. He was activated Saturday, after fulfilling the minimum missed‑game requirement, and began the game as a starter. Despite a 48‑minute appearance on the Gillette Stadium video board that drew an ovation from the crowd, the player’s first outing in Boston was marred by drops and a lack of the production that has defined his six 1,000‑yard seasons and three Pro Bowl selections.

“He’s been in the league a long time. He knows how to deal with things,” said Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez, who watched Brown’s performance from the sidelines. “He’s been out for a while, so it’s different when you get out there and catch the ball when everyone is flying around. Everyone in the locker room and in this building, we have the utmost confidence in him.”

When the ball was thrown, Brown was hit by a variety of defensive looks. In the first half, a deep pass from quarterback Drake Maye fell off his glove, and he was forced to let an on‑side kick slip through his grasp—a play that, fortunately, did not cost New England in the end, as tight end Eli Raridon recovered the ball. By the third quarter, the crowd’s cheers had turned into boos after a third‑quarter drop that seemed to symbolize the player’s frustration with his own lack of reliability.

“We have all the confidence in the world in A.J. to be able to finish those plays,” said Patriots coach Mike Vrabel in a post‑game address. “He knows that. We have high expectations for him.” Vrabel, who also coached Brown’s rookie campaign in Tennessee, added, “Unfortunately, it wasn’t his best effort. He knows that. We’re confident he’ll come back stronger.”

Brown himself offered a brief statement while standing at his locker. “No excuses. Ankle or not, I should make those plays,” he said, acknowledging the shortfall in his game.

The Patriots’ defense, however, stepped up to offset the offensive shortcomings, holding the Jets to a 19‑point effort. New England’s 26‑19 victory was the team’s third straight win, continuing a winning streak that began in the final week of the previous season. While the offense struggled to find rhythm, the team’s overall performance was enough to secure a solid victory.

The game also highlighted the Patriots’ willingness to give a new player a chance in the high‑stakes environment of a home opener. Brown’s entrance was delayed, but when he finally appeared on the board, the crowd’s reaction—cheers, applause, and an extended ovation as he waved—was a testament to the excitement surrounding his acquisition. The enthusiasm, however, was short‑lived.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching how Brown adjusts to the Patriots’ system over the coming weeks. With an ankle that had previously been a concern and a reputation for big‑moment play, the question remains whether he can translate his past success to the Boston offense.

In the meantime, the Patriots have secured a win and kept their momentum going, while Brown faces the challenge of regaining confidence and consistency—both for himself and for a team that believes in his potential.
