Nine‑year‑old boy injured when dump truck rolls over foot in Portland

A 9‑year‑old child was injured after a dump truck ran over his foot near the intersection of Washington Avenue and Fox Street in Portland on Tuesday afternoon. Police said the incident occurred at about 2:30 p.m., and the boy was taken to Maine Medical Center for treatment of non‑life‑threatening injuries.

According to Portland Police Department spokesperson Brad Nadeau, witnesses observed the child attempting to cross the street against a pedestrian crossing sign when the truck struck his foot. The driver tried to stop the vehicle, but was unable to avoid the collision. No charges have been filed against the truck driver.

Nadeau urged anyone who saw the crash to contact the department at 207‑874‑8584. The investigation is ongoing, but the police report indicated that the boy’s injuries were not critical.

The crash followed a fatal vehicle‑pedestrian collision on Saturday that killed a 13‑year‑old from Scarborough and left two other teenagers injured. That incident, which took place on Warren Avenue, has prompted city officials to call for increased vigilance on Portland’s roads.

Mayor Mark Dion released a statement in the evening that highlighted the “heart‑wrenching” nature of these recent accidents. “Whether you are driving, walking or riding a bicycle, I am asking every resident and visitor to be extra mindful and alert,” Dion said. He emphasized that the city council is “steadfast” in its commitment to improving safety but noted that infrastructure and enforcement alone are not enough. “We need everyone’s help and shared commitment to keep each other safe,” he added, urging residents to slow down, eliminate distractions and look out for one another so that “every child and community member arrives home safely.”

The Portland Police Department remains on the scene and will continue to gather evidence and statements from witnesses. The city has not announced any specific changes to traffic patterns or road design at the Washington‑Fox intersection, but officials have reiterated their focus on reducing serious crashes.

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution on all city streets, especially around school zones and pedestrian crossings, until further updates are released.
