Class A regional finalists fill the top four spots in the Varsity Maine field hockey poll, while Class B’s remaining teams occupy four of the next five spots in the rankings.

Cheverus, the unanimous No. 1 since the season began and the three-time defending state champion, faces fourth-ranked Thornton Academy, which moved up four spots from the most recent poll, in the A South final. The Stags’ common state title game foil, Skowhegan, is in the A North final, but the No. 3 River Hawks lost their only regular-season matchup with second-ranked Mt. Ararat.

The B South title game features No. 5 Yarmouth and No. 9 Freeport. The Clippers almost went undefeated in the regular season, but they lost to the Falcons in the final game.

Sixth-ranked Leavitt and seventh-ranked Nokomis were the most consistent teams in B North this fall, so it’s not surprising that they’ll be doing battle in the regional title game. The Hornets won the teams’ only regular-season meeting, 2-0 on Sept. 17 in Newport.

No. 10 Foxcroft, ranked for the first time this fall, meets Dexter in the C North final.

The Varsity Maine field hockey poll is based on games played through Saturday, Oct. 31. The top 10 teams are voted on by the Varsity Maine staff, with first-place votes in parentheses, followed by total points.

1. Cheverus (9) 90
2. Mt. Ararat 81
3. Skowhegan 71
4. Thornton Academy 56
5. Yarmouth 45
6. Leavitt 38
