Four people were rescued from a sinking boat early Tuesday morning after it struck a rock off the coast of Wells and Ogunquit.

The Wells Fire Department said it received a call shortly after 12 a.m. reporting a vessel between Wells and Ogunquit that was taking on water. Officials arrived at the scene and determined that an 18-foot center console vessel carrying four adults had struck Bibb Rock.

The Ogunquit Fire Department’s marine unit was deployed around 12:30 a.m., and the passengers were rescued after about 20 minutes. They were taken to Perkins Cove, where they were evaluated by EMS, and then transported to hospitals for treatment.

Maine Marine Patrol Officer Tim Beauchamp said the most severe injury was a compound fracture to the leg. That passenger underwent surgery Tuesday. The others were released from the hospital after receiving treatment for minor injuries.

It is unclear what caused the boat to collide with Bibb Rock. Maine Marine Patrol is continuing the investigation, Beauchamp said.

The sinking boat floated north and later washed ashore on Wells Beach. Wells police said in a Facebook post that officials are working to safely remove the boat from the beach. A photo shared by police showed a small, white vessel carrying fishing gear.
