4 boys facing charges after assault on bridge between Berwick, New Hampshire
Four boys have been charged after police say they injured a man in an attack on a bridge between Berwick and Somersworth, New Hampshire, in July.
Berwick police said in a news release Monday that a fifth boy involved in the alleged assault was too young to be charged, while a sixth was never identified.
Officers from Berwick and Somersworth responded to the bridge over the Salmon Falls River just before 11:40 p.m. on July 10 after receiving reports of a man lying on the bridge between the two towns. Witnesses told officers that they saw several boys beating up a man, and that the boys scattered when a driver honked at them.
The victim, a 45-year-old man, was transported to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital in Dover, New Hampshire, to be treated for a broken jaw and nose.
Berwick police say they obtained two videos showing a brief conversation between at least six boys and the victim before the attack. The juveniles surrounded the man, who was alone, and knocked him to the ground when he tried to push through them. The videos show that the boys kicked the victim in the head twice, police say.
The York County District Attorney’s office reviewed the case and charged a 15-year-old boy with aggravated assault and three 12-year-old boys with disorderly conduct. A 10-year-old boy was not charged, per a state law excluding children under 11 from the juvenile justice system. Another suspect was never identified.
It is unclear what prompted the assault, how the boys knew one another or whether they knew the victim. Police declined to release more information, citing the investigation’s ongoing status.
