2 police officers among 'multiple victims' shot in downtown Minneapolis

Multiple people were struck by gunfire in downtown Minneapolis on Wednesday afternoon, leaving at least one person dead and six others wounded, according to officials. Two Minneapolis police officers were among those hit; one was struck in the shin and the other in the abdomen. Their conditions have not been released.

Authorities said the suspected shooter was subdued at the scene. Seven patients in total were transported to Hennepin Healthcare Medical Center for treatment.

The incident prompted a heavy police presence, with agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in nearby St. Paul joining the response. FBI Director Kash Patel said he was aware of the shooting and that the bureau would provide any resources needed to assist local investigators.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz took to social media to address the violence, writing that his public safety team was responding to a downtown shooting and that state officials were on the ground to support law enforcement. He later added that Minnesotans were praying for first responders and urged others to “pray for Minnesota.”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, the Democratic nominee in the state’s gubernatorial race, said she had spoken with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey about the “horrific shootings.” She offered her prayers for the victims and their families and thanked law enforcement for their courage. Her Republican opponent, state House Speaker Lisa Demuth, echoed those sentiments, saying she was praying for the victims of what she called a heinous crime and was grateful for the swift response of police officers.

The University of St. Thomas, which maintains a building near the scene, announced it had locked down its Minneapolis campus as a precaution.

Investigators have not yet disclosed a motive for the shooting, and the condition of the officers remains unclear. Officials said they will release further details as the investigation progresses.
