A 13‑year‑old boy was killed Saturday night when a car struck a group of teenagers near the corner of Warren and Church streets in Portland. The crash, which took place just before 9 p.m., left the young boy dead at the scene and injured two other boys who were treated at Maine Medical Center.

The Portland Police Department received a call about a single‑vehicle crash involving three pedestrians in the area around 512 Warren Avenue. When officers arrived, they found the teens had been walking along the north side of Warren and had stepped off the curb into the roadway. They were struck by a vehicle traveling in the same direction. The driver was a 48‑year‑old Portland resident. Police say the driver was traveling at a normal speed and that the teens entered the street abruptly, a factor cited in the investigation.

The boy who was struck first was 13 years old. He was pronounced dead on the scene. A 14‑year‑old and a 15‑year‑old were transported to Maine Medical Center with serious injuries that, while not life‑threatening, required immediate medical care. Other members of the group were uninjured. After the initial investigation, the 48‑year‑old driver was taken to the same hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.

Investigators from the Portland Police Department worked in conjunction with the Cumberland County District Attorney’s Office and the Portland Public Schools Superintendent’s Office. No charges have yet been filed, and the investigation remains open. Police are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or who has information that could help the inquiry to call investigators at 207‑874‑8575.

This fatality marks the third pedestrian death in Portland this year. A woman was killed last August on Forest Avenue and a man died in June on Marginal Way. The pattern of pedestrian incidents has prompted city officials to review crosswalk safety and street design in high‑traffic areas.

The 13‑year‑old’s name and details about his family have not yet been released pending notification. The city has issued a statement expressing condolences and reaffirming its commitment to improving pedestrian safety. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about vehicle‑pedestrian interactions in urban neighborhoods and highlights the need for continued vigilance and infrastructure improvements to protect residents of all ages.
