A fatal three-vehicle collision on Route 1 in Saco on Friday has left one person dead and prompted an ongoing investigation into how a Ford Explorer veered into opposing lanes of traffic, according to the Saco Police Department.

Emergency crews responded to the crash shortly after it was reported in the late morning. Authorities said the Ford Explorer was traveling along Route 1 when it crossed the centerline into oncoming traffic for reasons still under investigation. The Explorer collided with two other vehicles in a chain-reaction crash that left the roadway closed for several hours as first responders worked to extract occupants and provide medical aid.

One person, whose identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two others involved in the crash were transported to a nearby hospital with injuries; their conditions have not been publicly disclosed as of the latest update from police.

"We are still in the early stages of gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses," a spokesperson for the Saco Police Department said in a statement. "Our goal is to piece together exactly what happened so we can provide answers to the families affected and to the community."

Route 1, also known as Main Street through much of Saco, is a busy commercial corridor lined with businesses, restaurants, and residential side streets. Traffic in both directions was rerouted for several hours following the crash while police documented the scene and a tow crew worked to remove the damaged vehicles.

Investigators have not yet indicated whether speed, weather conditions, driver impairment, or a medical event may have contributed to the crash. They are asking anyone who witnessed the collision or who may have dashboard camera or surveillance footage of the moments leading up to it to contact the Saco Police Department.

The fatal crash comes as Maine has seen a notable uptick in roadway fatalities in recent years, a trend that has concerned safety advocates across the state. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety has repeatedly urged drivers to remain attentive behind the wheel, obey posted speed limits, and avoid all forms of distracted driving.

A full report from the Saco Police Department, including the names of those involved and any potential contributing factors, is expected in the coming days once the investigation is further along. No charges have been filed at this stage.

Anyone with information about the crash is encouraged to call the Saco Police Department at their non-emergency line.
