The driver of a van died after they struck a parked work vehicle in the Penobscot County town of Eddington on Monday, officials say.

First responders were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Route 9 near the Eddington Fire Department around 1:10 p.m., the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

A van traveling westbound on Route 9 crossed the roadway and struck a work vehicle that was legally parked in a breakdown lane, the sheriff’s office said.

The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene of the head-on collision, the sheriff’s office said, while the operator of the parked vehicle was transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for treatment.

The sheriff’s office did not identify either person involved and said it is still investigating the crash to determine a cause.

The Eddington, Holden and Brewer fire and rescue departments, as well as Capital Ambulance, assisted at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
